Sailing and Racing References

The following list of sailing references was provided by Tom Orlow, a friend of several BLYC members, who sails and races on Lake Michigan, Lake Charlevoix, and Douglas Lake.

Books:

1) Jobson, Gary and Whidden, Tom  Championship Tactics

2) Conner, Dennis  Sail Like a Champion

3) Banks and Kenny  Looking at Sails

4) Walker, Stuart  Winning: The Psychology of Competition

5) Melges, Buddy  Sailing Smart

6) Whidden, Tom  The Art and Science of Sails

7) Elvstrom, Paul  Expert Dinghy and Keel Boat Racing

8) Watts, Alan  Basic Windcraft

9) Jobson, Gary  Sailing Fundamentals (In my judgment the best book on the market for beginning and novice sailors)

10)     Gladstone, Bill  Performance Racing Trim (4th Edition) and Performance Racing Tactics (5th Edition)  (PRT also available in CD-ROM)

11)     The Sunfish Bible*

(a) White, Will  The Sunfish Book

(b) Fries, Derrick  Successful Sunfish Racing

(c) Lewis, Larry  Sail it Flat

* Partially depending on what you sail I would put these two books at the head of my list

Newsletters:

1) Dave Dellenbaugh's Speed and Smarts (to subscribe call 1-800-356-2200) If I were allowed to choose only one source off of this entire bibliography this is it.

2) The Windward Leg (Sunfish Class Association)

3) Lightning Flashes (Lightning Class Association)

4) The Bagpipe (Thistle Class Association)

5) American Sailor (US Sailing Magazine) - If you have a subscription to Sailing World this publication is bundled inside as long as you are a US Sailing member. Based on all the things this organization does for racing and non-racing; sailors, if you are not a member I would strongly urge very serious consideration to joining. Individual and/or family memberships are not at all expensive.

Magazines:

1) Sailing World Really the only technical racing magazine available in the U.S.

2) Practical Sailor The best source available for the evaluation of new equipment.

Videos:

1) The Shape of Speed (North Sails)

2) Sail Trimming (North Sails)

3) Spinnaker Sailing (Sail Magazine)

4) Starting Tactics, Upwind Sailing, Downwind Sailing (J World)
